Construction activity spurs sales across county, but consumer purchases range below state average

Dave Gallagher, The Bellingham Herald

When Sage Bishop opened her second women’s consignment clothing store earlier this month in Bellingham, she was hoping the demand would be there for both businesses. So far, it has worked out great.

“Summer is usually a slower time of year for consignment clothing, but just in the first few weeks we have seen a lot of people buying and selling some fabulous clothes,” said Bishop, who owns Labels, on Ellis Street near downtown. The second store she opened is in Bakerview Square.

“You are always worried when you first open at a new location, but I’m really happy about how this has turned out.”

Bishop picked a good industry to be in these days: Retail sales of clothing and accessories in Whatcom County totaled $84.7 million in 2006, up 21.7 percent from the previous year, according to the state Department of Revenue figures announced earlier this month. It’s one of several retail sectors that did well in Whatcom County.
